Research Interests

I am a physical activity researcher with interests in broad epidemiology and public health applications. I conduct research to improve physical activity assessment techniques and work to develop and evaluate strategies to promote physical activity in the population. Click here to see a list of research publications. I supervise doctoral students, masters students and undergraduate students involved in honors projects or independent study experiences. Some of my work is coordinated on campus through the Health Promotion and Exercise Lab in the Forker Building. A number of clinical studies are also conducted through the research labs within the Nutrition and Wellness Research Center (NWRC). Through the NWRC, I also coordinate the activities of an interdisciplinary research group called the Campus Community Partnership for Health (CCPH). The ISU CCPH group is affiliated with ISU Extension to Families and ISU Extension to Communities and is guided by established principles of "community-based participatory research" and utilizes service learning as the primary programming strategy. Students work with and through the CCPH group on various community-based initiatives designed to promote healthy lifestyles in communities. Visit the CCPH website for more information.

Scientific Director of FITNESSGRAM

I serve as the Scientific Director of the FITNESSGRAM Youth Fitness program based out of the Cooper Institute in Dallas Texas. The program provides an assessment and promotion tool for physical educators to use within school based physical education programs. Additional information on the FITNESSGRAM program is available at www.fitnessgram.net. An online manual (The FITNESSGRAM Reference Guide) is available to answer technical questions about the FITNESSGRAM and ACTIVITYGRAM assessments and the overall philosophy of the FITNESSGRAM program.

Concepts of Fitness and Wellness Textbooks

I am a co-author of a series of books on fitness and wellness originally developed by Dr. Charles B. Corbin. The line of books originated with the publication of the Concepts of Physical Fitness text which is in its 16th edition. A more comprehensive book covering various fitness and wellness topics (Concepts of Fitness and Wellness) is in its 9th edition.
